Lately I’ve been noticing that people really do not know basic terms in the food world. If I go out to eat and order a Shrimp Po Boy and ask my waiter/waitress for some aioli and he/she doesn’t even know what that is? It’s like who hired you? Don’t get me wrong now, we learn something new everyday. But sometimes it gets out of hand that the people serving our food don’t even know what they are serving. So I’m here to try and help. Here I will list a few food terms that I noticed that people don’t know.
Aioli – pretty much a fancy mayo (homemade) with garlic and other ingredients
Spicy Mayo – could kind of be a aioli substitute, same set up with mayo, hot sauce and other ingredients
Sauté – when food is cooked slightly in butter or oil in high temperature pan (don’t bring me no fried mess)
Garnish – a simple ingredient(s) that’s added to the food last, simply for more flavor or just appeal to the eye
Herbs – pronounced as “erbs” the h is silent, these are leafy plants used as seasoning (parsley, thyme, rosemary, tarragon, chives are some of my favorite!)
Rest – resting food especially steak allows your food to finish cooking plus absorb all the juices back.
Zest – the rind, outer layer of a citrus fruit (orange, lime, lemon) used to add flavor to food sauces etc.
Reduce – to let a liquid simmer or boil to thicken up
These were just some random terms that I noticed people didn’t know about it. Just thought I would inform you all. Comment below on food terms everyone should know!
