I would always see these little rice sandwich come across my Instagram timeline. Figured out what they were and had my first one in Denver, Colorado. Spam Musubi! Its a fried slice of spam in a simple sauce between fluffy short grain rice and sometimes accompanied with egg. Super simple but super tasty!
Spam Musubi
Ingredients
- 7 oz spam cut into thick slices
- 1 cup of short grain rice cooked
- 2 sheets of nori cut in strips
- 1 egg optional
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp white sugar
Instructions
- Start by adding your soy sauce and sugar to a dry non stick skillet on medium heat. Mix until sugar is dissolved.
- Place in your spam and let it simmer in sauce 3-5 minutes each side.
- Remove spam and clean out skillet. ( I poured the sauce in a small dish to drizzle over later) In the cleaned skillet, place spam back in and fry each side 1-2 minutes on medium high heat. Set spam aside.
- If you’re using egg. Beat your egg and add a little bit of butter to pan. Pour in egg and spread out thin. Let it cook then flip and cook some more. Set aside.
- Now to assemble your musubi. Keep your spam container. Get some plastic wrap and place inside spam container. Take about 2 tbsp of your cooked rice and press into container until even and flat. Now place a piece of spam along with piece of your egg. Top with 2 more tbsp of cooked rice and press until even and flat.
- Now carefully lift your plastic wrap from out the container. You should have a spam and rice sandwich aka musubi! Take a strip of nori and wrap it around. You can dip these in your reserve sauce or eat plain. Enjoy!
Notes
Please use short grain rice! Jasmine rice and any other long grain rice will not work. Its not going to stick together.
